Did you realize that windows XP is almost 7 years old...? According to sources on the Internet, Microsoft will discontinue OEM and packaged sales of Windows XP on June30, 2008 (initial date was Jan 31, 2008) - leaving us with Vista as the only choice of Windows OS. However, some other sources say that the list of OEMs only includes big guys, like Dell, Toshiba, Gateway and Lenovo.  Apparently Microsoft will continue selling OEM copies of Windows XP via its System Builder channel through January 31, 2009…. I wonder it that's true and where Seanix fits into this....

At the same time Microsoft plans to release a final Service Pack to Win XP - SP3 in the first half of 2008, no specific date announced yet...., and the rumor goes that it supposed to make it run 10% faster! A week ago (Feb 7, 2008) they released Windows XP SP3 RC 2 to private beta testers.

Having said that, it was announced earlier that support for consumer versions of XP ends on April 14, 2009, and with it, comes no more new patches to be downloaded from the Windows Update site.

Microsoft will release Windows XP Service Pack 3 during the second half of April, according to a report from a Web site that has correctly predicted recent Windows ship dates. (...) Microsoft declined comment, other than to repeat an earlier statement about the service pack's timing. "We are targeting 1H [first half] 2008 for the release of XP SP3 RTM, though our timing will always be based on customer feedback as a first priority". (...)

Once SP3 ships, the next major milestones for Windows XP are June 30, when the popular operating system is slated to fall off the reseller and retail availability list, and Jan. 31 2009, when it will be taken out of all distribution channels, including system builders.

Businesses that aren’t quite ready to deploy the Vista operating system as of the June 30 expiration date can continue to use XP, said Microsoft Corp. in a letter released to its customers this week. Organizations using Windows Vista Business or Vista Ultimate can take advantage of “downgrade rights,” which allow IT departments to essentially buy the Vista license and legally downgrade to XP. When they are ready, they can revert back to Vista without paying for an upgrade.(...) An area of concern for customers, said Katz, was whether support for XP would be available after June 30. The letter clarifies that Microsoft will continue to offer support until April 2014.

Another frequently asked question from customers is whether they can still buy PCs with the XP operating system. Although, Microsoft will stop selling XP as a retailed packaged product and stop licensing it directly to OEMs, those interested in obtaining XP on a PC, can still do so as long as retailers and OEMs have it in their inventory.

The next version of the operating system, Windows 7 (that won’t be the name upon release) will be available in 2010.
