BlackBerry’s Quest: Fend Off the iPhone

(...) Mr. Lazaridis thinks that e-mail-dependent BlackBerry owners demand the reliability and tactile feedback of a keyboard. But, despite his critique of the iPhone, he does not dismiss the possibility that R.I.M. may itself one day sell a touch-screen phone, aimed specifically at consumers without the e-mail demands of BlackBerry’s core users.

Indeed, two independent developers writing software for coming R.I.M. devices say that a touch-screen BlackBerry is in the works, and that R.I.M. engineers privately refer to it as the A.K. — for “Apple Killer."  ( full story )

itWorldCanada, Thursday, July 10, 2008

According to published reports, Apple stores in Canada won’t be carrying the new 3G iPhone when it’s released in this country because the company is “disgusted” with pricing plans offered by exclusive carrier Rogers Wireless.

Apple Insider reported that the company wants nothing to do with helping Rogers sell its service through Apple retail outlets. The story has been widely circulating on Apple-oriented blogs. Apple Insider has also reported that Apple has diverted a significant amount of the initial 3G shipment to Europe, limiting Rogers to 10 to 20 iPhones per store. ( full story )

The Boldest BlackBerry yet made its North American debut on Thursday, with Rogers Wireless and Research in Motion launching RIM’s first HSPA-capable handset at Rogers’s Toronto headquarters. (...)

The Bold features three-band (802.11a, b and g) Wi-Fi support, built-in GPS for location-based applications, a full QWERTY keyboard, full HTML browsing and a media player that’s compatible with Rogers MusicStore and can also synch with Apple’s iTunes. “The screen is really at the forefront of the experience,” Spence said of the 480-by-320-pixel half-VGA display, which supports 65,000 colours. But the most significant feature is the high speed packet access (HSPA) capability, which boasts a theoretical capacity of 3.2 Mbps, though in practice it will be slower, according to Spence.

In a move that does not seem to have caught anyone by surprise, Bell Canada and Telus Corp. announced last week they are working together on a High Speed Packet Access or HSPA network, scheduled for completion in 2010. (...) Rather than ditch their respective CDMA and EvDO networks, the companies indicated they will continue to offer existing wireless services for now. Telus said it will support its EvDO and Mike networks “for the foreseeable future” while Bell said it “continues to expand and enhance” its national CDMA network.  [ Full Story ]
